Courtney Stodden, a 31-year-old singer and reality star, has released a new single titled "Choke" that serves as a powerful statement for anyone who has experienced mistreatment in relationships. The track, which is primed for nightclub dance floors, features a direct and unapologetic message underneath the upbeat production.
Stodden's journey has been marked by tumultuous relationships, including her high-profile marriage to Doug Hutchinson when she was just 16 years old and he was 51. She has also been open about flushing an engagement ring from her ex-fiancé Chris Sheng down the toilet last year. "I've had a history with choosing men who aren't so great," Stodden reflects. "I've learned a lot about toxic relationships."
The inspiration for "Choke" came from a moment of introspection for Stodden. "I was sitting by the fire one night, and I just wrote in my diary, 'I hope your abuser chokes,'" she explains. "For me, it came from a really deep level, but then I'm just like, you know what? If I'm too much for you, then you can just choke."
The release of the song coincides with the premiere of Stodden's Lifetime biopic, "I Was a Child Bride: The Courtney Stodden Story," which has become the network's top movie of the year. Reflecting on her whirlwind life, Stodden says, "I thought I was going to be dead by the time I was 27, so already having a biopic at 31 is a little, like, 'Wow, I've been living so fast...'"
Now in a healthier relationship with her husband Jared Safier, Stodden hopes "Choke" will empower anyone who has faced similar challenges. "If they can't handle you and if they make you feel like you're the problem, you deserve to step into your power, leave them in the past," she says. "And I hope they choke because they never could have handled you."
