Summary
- Chesney's therapist gifted him a goldendoodle puppy to help him cope
- Chesney and ex-partner Mary Nolan shared custody of their dogs
- Nolan's dog Ruby passed away, leaving Chesney and Nolan to grieve together

In his new memoir "Heart Life Music," country music star Kenny Chesney, 57, reflects on a pivotal moment in his personal life. In 2011, just before Christmas, Chesney's therapist arrived at his door with a goldendoodle puppy, telling the singer he needed to "learn to attach to something." Though initially hesitant, Chesney soon found himself falling in love with the dog, whom he named Poncho.
Around the same time, Chesney's then-partner Mary Nolan adopted a rescue dog of her own, a red-nosed pit bull terrier. The four of them—Chesney, Nolan, Poncho, and Nolan's dog Ruby—became a family, even as Chesney and Nolan's relationship "shifted." The dogs remained a constant, with Chesney and Nolan sharing "joint custody" to ensure the canine companions were never separated.
Tragically, in late 2022, Nolan's dog Ruby passed away. Chesney and Nolan came together to give Ruby and Poncho one last adventure in California before the inevitable. Chesney recalls the bittersweet experience, saying Ruby "taught us all so many lessons" about love and moving beyond one's limits.

Though Chesney and Nolan's romantic relationship ultimately ended, their shared love for their dogs kept them connected. Chesney's memoir offers a poignant look at how the unconditional love of pets can provide comfort and stability during life's most challenging moments.
