For 60 years, a North London warehouse has been the secret hub for transforming global film, television, and theatre stars into their iconic characters. Cosprop, the renowned costume house, has dressed legends from Meryl Streep to the casts of Downton Abbey, enabling actors to fully embody their roles. Helena Bonham Carter famously described the experience as entering as oneself and leaving as the character.
To commemorate its milestone anniversary, Cosprop presents 'Costume Couture: Sixty Years of Cosprop' at London's Fashion and Textile Museum. The exhibition features celebrated creations like Meryl Streep's "Out of Africa" suit and Cate Blanchett's Elizabeth I robes. Visitors can also see Johnny Depp's Pirates of the Caribbean costume and Colin Firth's Mr. Darcy attire.
Founded in 1965 by John Bright, Cosprop's influence is vast, with its archive holding over a million items. These include vintage dresses, shoes, hats, and accessories, all meticulously cataloged. The company employs over 40 specialists, including milliners and tailors, who maintain and create costumes using authentic fabrics and historical methods. Many pieces are reused, reflecting a commitment to sustainability.
The exhibition aims to celebrate Cosprop's significant contribution to the entertainment industry, bringing to light the stories behind recognizable costumes. Curator Keith Lodwick noted the challenge of selecting just 85 items from the "greatest hits," emphasizing the company's hidden but monumental impact on screen history.
