Corey Kent's career took an unexpected turn when a casual soundcheck performance of his song "Empty Words" resonated more strongly with fans than his intended single, "Rocky Mountain Low." Initially released in late last year, "Rocky Mountain Low" featured Koe Wetzel. However, a video posted in early February of Kent singing "Empty Words" during a Denver soundcheck unexpectedly captured the public's imagination. This track, a sonic departure from his previous work, was thought to be a hidden gem on his upcoming record.
By March, "Empty Words" began climbing country radio charts, with stations in Denver, Dallas, and Nashville picking up the song. This spontaneous success has shaped the direction of Kent's new 16-track album, "Heartland Rock and Roll," set for release this Friday. The album represents a deliberate expansion of his musical boundaries, drawing from influences ranging from Red Dirt and Texas country to R&B and soul, alongside artists like John Cougar Mellancamp and Ray Charles.
Kent, who hails from Oklahoma and Texas, embraced a broader musical scope for "Heartland Rock and Roll," inspired by his roots and diverse listening habits. The album features collaborations with friends, including Jason Aldean on "Rather Be Here," and closes with "Bixby," an ode to his Tulsa suburb upbringing. Kent is currently supporting Koe Wetzel on tour and will embark on his own "Heartland Rock and Roll Tour" later this year.
