The tensions came to a head during a live-streamed sash ceremony, when Thai pageant executive Nawat Itsaragrisil publicly confronted Miss Mexico Ftima Bosch, accusing her of skipping a promotional shoot and calling her a "dummy" on camera.
Bosch refused to remain silent, defending herself and declaring that she was being disrespected as a woman and a representative of her country. Her strong response received support from nearby contestants, and moments later, more than a dozen delegates, including reigning Miss Universe Victoria Kjr Theilvig, stood up and walked out in solidarity with Bosch.
