28 Sep
Summary
- Content creators should play with algorithms, not against them.
- Hema Gill faced colorism but gained recognition via music video.
- Aspiring creators need not have large followings to succeed.
The NDTV Yuva 2026 event featured a session on content creation with Viraj Sheth, CEO of Monk Entertainment, Hema Gill, and Anubhavi Yadav. Speakers advised creators to "play for the algorithm, not against it" and to continuously reinvent themselves.
Hema Gill spoke candidly about facing colorism early in her career, with people commenting negatively on her skin tone and appearance. She highlighted that her role in Guru Randhawa's music video 'Vogue' significantly elevated her profile and offered gratitude for the opportunity.
Viraj Sheth offered encouragement to aspiring content creators, stating that having even 5,000 followers can be sufficient for success if the content is sustainable and organic. He noted that the industry now offers numerous opportunities, even for those who prefer not to show their faces online.
Regarding earnings, Sheth suggested that content creation can yield higher incomes than previous jobs, allowing creators to surpass hierarchical limitations. Yadav added that creators can potentially move up two tax brackets. Both Gill and Yadav expressed skepticism about the long-term viability of AI-generated content, believing audiences prefer relatable human creators.
