Conan's Lost Show: A Reality TV Flop
15 Feb
Summary
- Conan O'Brien's first production, 'Lost,' was a reality show.
- It competed directly with 'The Amazing Race' and 9/11.
- The show suffered low ratings and was canceled quickly.

Conan O'Brien's production company, Conaco, launched its very first series, a reality show titled 'Lost.' This ambitious program, which aired on TBS, involved three teams of two strangers dropped into remote locations. Their objective was to travel back to the Statue of Liberty in New York City with only a backpack of supplies, navigating challenges to win a $200,000 prize.
However, the show's debut on September 10, 2001, proved disastrously timed. It premiered just one day before the globally renowned reality competition, 'The Amazing Race.' Compounding these issues, the following day's terrorist attacks significantly overshadowed all television programming.
Consequently, 'Lost' was critically hampered by its formidable competition and the tragic events of September 11th. The series experienced exceptionally low viewership for NBC, leading to its swift cancellation. All episodes were not aired, marking a short-lived and unsuccessful beginning for the production company's first venture.
