Comedian Marc Maron Bares His Soul in Poignant Grief Documentary

In the past two years, comedian and podcaster Marc Maron has been on a deeply personal journey through grief, which is now captured in the intimate documentary "Are We Good?". The film, directed by Steven Feinartz, offers a poignant look at Maron's life in the aftermath of the sudden passing of his girlfriend, filmmaker Lynn Shelton, in May 2020.

Shelton, who was 54 years old, died of acute myeloid leukemia just weeks into the COVID-19 pandemic. The documentary features Maron, now 64, recounting the harrowing experience of Shelton's rapid decline and her death, which he describes as "all very horrible, just unexpected and horrible." Maron's friends, including comedians John Mulaney, David Cross, and Michaela Watkins, also share insights into the special bond the couple shared, with Watkins noting that Shelton found Maron's "fussiness so endearing."

The film follows Maron as he navigates the grieving process, capturing his raw emotions and moments of vulnerability, such as when he breaks down upon seeing Shelton's belongings still by his door. Maron also pours his grief into his stand-up comedy, testing out material that eventually made its way into his 2023 HBO special, "Marc Maron: From Bleak to Dark."
