Hong Kong's highest-grossing police action series is expanding with "Cold War 1994," a prequel unveiled at Hong Kong FilMart. Executive producer Bill Kong confirmed the new film delves into the universe's origins, focusing on the 1994 power reshuffle that seeded subsequent events. The prequel operates across two timelines: 2017, marked by the disappearance of M.B. Lee (Tony Leung Ka-fai), and the twilight of British colonial rule in 1994.
This ambitious project has gathered an unparalleled ensemble of 10 Hong Kong Film Award best actor winners, anchored by legends Chow Yun-fat, Aaron Kwok, Tony Leung Ka-fai, and Louis Koo. The narrative intertwines the disappearance of Hong Kong's Secretary for Security in 2017 with events from 1994. These include the disbanding of the Royal Hong Kong Police Force's Special Branch and the kidnapping of a business tycoon, leading to a dangerous internal power struggle.
Key cast members for the 1994 storyline include Daniel Wu as Deputy Commissioner Peter Choi and Terrance Lau as M.B. Lee. The 2017 thread features Louis Koo as Chief Executive-elect Adrian Yip Shun-ting. The international cast includes Aidan Gillen and Hugh Bonneville. Directed by Longman Leung, "Cold War 1994" is set to debut later this year, promising to uncover the true origins and long-standing mysteries of the 'Cold War' world.
