Country Music's Twin Titans: CMA vs. ACM Explained

Country music boasts a unique support system with two major trade organizations: the Country Music Association (CMA) and the Academy of Country Music (ACM). These entities work to promote country music globally, fostering both established stars and emerging talent. The CMA was established in Nashville in 1958 by music executives aiming to position country music as a sophisticated genre, initially focusing on tradition and the Eastern U.S. The organization was instrumental in creating the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1961 and its first awards show in 1967, which has since become a major fall television event in Nashville.

In response to the growing West Coast scene and a different musical philosophy, the Country & Western Music Academy was founded in Los Angeles in 1964. This group championed artists from the Western states and a more progressive sound. It hosted the first country music awards show in 1966, with early winners reflecting the electrified Bakersfield sound. While it grew nationally, it maintained a Western orientation with its awards show often held in Las Vegas. However, in 2022, the ACM officially relocated its headquarters to Nashville, unifying the organizations' presence.

Today, the CMA and ACM continue their distinct operations, yet share the common goal of celebrating country music as a unique American art form. Their dual efforts provide robust support for the genre, each organization contributing its own character and history to country music's vibrant landscape.
