The second annual £10,000 Climate Fiction prize has revealed its shortlist, highlighting novels that creatively address the climate crisis. The nominated works span various genres, including speculative fiction and mythic retellings, showcasing diverse approaches to environmental themes.
Among the contenders are novels depicting near-future scenarios like China's flooding and a dystopian San Francisco, alongside stories set in wilder landscapes and futures impacted by artificial intelligence and environmental decay. Other entries tackle complex issues such as social injustice and global conflicts intertwined with ecological collapse.
The prize, funded by Climate Spring, aims to recognize fiction that grapples with defining themes of our time, including power, community, and resilience. The winner is set to be announced on May 27, following a previous launch at the Hay literary festival in June 2024. The inaugural award was given to Abi Daré's 'And So I Roar'.
