Shakespeare's Globe is set to launch its inaugural climate playwriting prize in 2026, aiming to utilize the art of theatre to foster a more restorative connection with the natural world. Artistic director Michelle Terry emphasized the historical link between Shakespeare's works and nature, highlighting the theatre's own elemental design.
The prize offers £15,000 to the winning playwright, along with crucial development support. This includes rehearsal drafts with experts from Shakespeare's Globe and partner organizations Climate Spring and Fern Culture, plus exposure to key industry figures. The competition is open to un-produced, full-length English plays addressing the climate and nature crisis, with themes interpreted broadly.
Submissions for the prize will commence in June and conclude on September 1, 2026, with winners announced in the autumn. This initiative is also fostering a network of climate storytelling workshops across the UK through partnerships with numerous regional theatres, amplifying the message and engaging diverse writers.
