Les Claypool and Sean Lennon have unveiled their third album as the Claypool Lennon Delirium, titled 'The Great Parrot-Ox and the Golden Egg of Empathy.' Les Claypool described the three-year creation process as a monumental undertaking akin to building the pyramids. The album is a rock opera, drawing inspiration from a thought experiment about an artificial intelligence literally following paper-clip-making instructions to global destruction.
Sean Lennon highlighted the challenge and enjoyment of fitting the songs into a cohesive narrative. The duo's creative dynamic is characterized by Claypool's desire to "go fishing" after a take, contrasted with Lennon's more meticulous approach, which Claypool playfully likens to Paul McCartney's obsession with detail. Claypool sees his role as introducing "warts and pimples" to balance Lennon's melodic inclinations.
Notably, Willow is the sole guest vocalist on the album, a long-time friend of Lennon's with whom he has unreleased collaborations. Lennon expressed admiration for Willow's open-minded musical taste spanning metal, jazz, and funk. The album features nearly all instruments played by the duo, with Lennon noting their distinct drumming styles significantly alter the songs' feel.
Fans can anticipate the "Claypool Gold 2026" summer tour, which will feature Primus, the Delirium, and Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade performing together each night. Further details and interviews with Claypool and Lennon are available on Rolling Stone Music Now podcast.
