Maya Myth Soars: Circus Meets Underworld Adventure

Artistic director Jorge Díaz has transformed the sacred Maya myth of the Popol Vuh into a vibrant circus-theater piece titled "Mortal Leap into Xibalba." The show, performed by the troupe Tránsito Cinco, vividly recounts the perilous journey of hero twins Ixbalanqué and Hunahpú through the Maya underworld, where they conquer death.

Since its 2023 debut, the production has periodically returned to the stage, with recent performances in Mexico City. Tránsito Cinco, established twenty years ago, merges circus arts with theatrical storytelling, aiming to deliver profound narratives beyond mere spectacle. This approach allows the circus techniques to enhance the story and characters, creating an immersive atmosphere.

The performance delves into the Maya worldview, where death is seen not as an end but as a rebirth, exemplified by the twins becoming the Sun and Moon. Díaz emphasizes the integration of pre-Hispanic Indigenous traditions into modern circus, offering a unique artistic expression that resonates with themes of transformation and cultural heritage.
