The Norwich Theatre Royal's Cinderella panto dazzles with vibrant designs and madcap humor, unfolding in the seaside town of Crabbington Sands. Designer Kirsteen Wythe's lurid costumes, including fishing rope wigs and beach ball dresses, are a visual spectacle. The production leans into traditional panto elements, offering jokes so bad they're brilliant, a 'Shoe Must Go On' gameshow, and a memorable 'air friar' routine.
Georgia May Foote embodies Cinderella with a warm, big-sister energy, though her character is somewhat insipid. The romance with the prince lacks spark, but the chemistry with Buttons, played by Joe Tracini, offers a brotherly dynamic. Hannah-Jane Fox portrays a charmingly flawed fairy godmother, whose failing magic causes delightful rhyming failures. The panto cleverly avoids common clichés by omitting a stepmother and using adult slang sparingly.
Jeevan Braich's Dandini is a standout, delivering a powerful performance. While the second half could benefit from a stronger climax, Andrew Lynford's production is ultimately a bright, boisterous, and warmly performed show. It leaves the audience with sore eyes, ringing ears, and a lasting smile, proving a delightful escape for the festive season.
