David Dhawan's upcoming film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is facing a legal challenge concerning the song Chunari Chunari. Music composers Akshay and IP Singh, who reimagined the track, emphasize that their "intent is what matters" and they aimed to contribute their best to the iconic song. They acknowledge that art is subjective and public reception can be mixed.
The controversy stems from a lawsuit filed by Vashu Bhagnani, who alleges that the song was used without prior consent. Bhagnani has initiated a Rs 400-crore suit against Tips Industries, Ramesh Taurani, Kumar S. Taurani, and David Dhawan. Tips Music, however, asserts its lawful ownership of the copyrights and claims to have obtained relief from the Supreme Court of India on May 22, 2026.
Pooja Entertainment, Bhagnani's production house, is contesting the Supreme Court's order, stating it was obtained without their knowledge and seeks to vacate it. They have also demanded the removal of the songs and a potential title change for the film, along with substantial damages. Meanwhile, Tips Industries producer Ramesh Taurani assured that the matter is being handled and would not halt the film's promotional activities or release.
