Summary
- Invested money with a fraudulent person in the late 1980s
- Lost his entire life savings he had been building up for retirement
- Took on "mortgage movies" to pay the bills after the financial setback

According to a recent interview, acclaimed actor Chris Sarandon faced a significant financial crisis in the late 1980s when he invested money with a fraudulent individual. Sarandon, now 83 years old, had been carefully saving his earnings throughout his career for his retirement, but this investment scheme resulted in him losing his entire life savings.
The "major financial reversal" took place around 1988-1989, when Sarandon "invested money with a guy who defrauded" him. He had purchased several properties in Manhattan during a prosperous period, but the person he trusted turned out to be a fraud. Sarandon became financially liable for the fraudulent actions, leading him to lose everything he had saved up.
This devastating setback was compounded by personal troubles, as Sarandon and his second wife, Lisa Ann Cooper, divorced in 1989 after nine years of marriage. To make ends meet, Sarandon had to take on acting roles in what he called "mortgage movies" - projects he may not have been fully passionate about, but were necessary to pay the bills.
Despite the bleak period, Sarandon's career eventually rebounded. He found success in 1993's The Nightmare Before Christmas, and while he doesn't appear on screen as frequently these days, he remains active in the industry, hosting a food podcast called Cooking By Heart. Sarandon considers himself a "lucky guy" to have weathered the storm and rebuilt his life.
