Casting couch real: Chinmayi challenges Chiranjeevi's claims

Singer Chinmayi Sripada has publicly challenged veteran Telugu actor Chiranjeevi's recent statement denying the existence of casting couch culture in the film industry. Chiranjeevi had suggested the phenomenon is not inherent to the industry but rather dependent on individual behavior. Chinmayi, drawing on personal experiences and those of others, strongly refuted this, asserting that casting couch remains a pervasive issue, particularly for women entering the field.

Chinmayi detailed instances where women faced assault or were refused roles unless they agreed to "full commitment," a euphemism for sexual favors. She countered Chiranjeevi's analogy of the industry being a mirror reflecting individual character, arguing that aspiring artists, including those from abroad, are aware of industry dynamics and are not merely reflections of their personal morality. Chinmayi also recounted her own traumatic experience of molestation by a respected lyricist, emphasizing that having a parent present offered no protection.

Further elaborating on industry terminology, Chinmayi warned against misinterpreting "commitment" as mere professionalism. She stated that men in power positions often demand sexual favors. Chinmayi also highlighted systemic issues, referencing cases of attempted sexual assault in studios and the continued platforming of male singers who engage in harassment. She pointed out that the MeToo movement was misunderstood by some, citing instances of established actresses criticizing those who spoke out about sexual harassment.
