Acclaimed Chinese language films are making a comeback with stunning 4K restorations. Film Movement Classics is releasing Zhang Yimou's "Raise the Red Lantern" and "To Live," alongside Hou Hsiao-hsien's "A City of Sadness." These cinematic treasures will first be shown in theaters across North America.
"A City of Sadness" (1989) by Hou Hsiao-hsien explores Taiwan's post-WWII era. Zhang Yimou's "Raise the Red Lantern" (1991) offers a visually rich depiction of household dynamics in 1920s China. "To Live" (1994), reuniting Yimou and Gong Li, chronicles a family's endurance through China's 20th-century political upheavals.
These restored masterpieces are hailed as transformative works that expanded global cinema's visual and emotional language. Their re-release aims to allow new and existing audiences to appreciate their full scale and beauty on the big screen.
