China Film Shines Bright at Cannes

The China Film Pavilion recently participated in its fifth consecutive Cannes Film Festival, an event that ran from May 12 through May 23. This participation aimed to showcase the vibrancy of Chinese cinema globally and integrate Chinese filmmakers with international industry resources.

The pavilion featured approximately 70 Chinese film companies and institutions, presenting over 180 domestic films. These selections garnered substantial industry attention, with a notable increase in foreign interest compared to previous years. Numerous international buyers and filmmakers engaged with representatives at the booth, exploring distribution rights and collaboration opportunities.

China's film market demonstrated significant growth, with the 2025 box office reaching $7.45 billion, a 21.95% increase year-over-year. The country also boasts the world's largest number of cinema screens, totaling 93,187. As of May 5, 2026, the Chinese film box office has already reached $1.98 billion.

Various events were organized to promote Sino-foreign film cooperation. These included networking mixers for dialogue between Chinese and foreign professionals and market screenings of films such as "Shanghai Wonton," "A Story About Fire," and "It's OK." A campus screening of "A Story About Fire" was also held, featuring insights from its director, LI Wenyu, who highlighted the diversity and world-class artistic and technological achievements of contemporary Chinese animation.
