Paramount Pictures has offered a first glimpse into the "Children of Blood and Bone" adaptation, unveiling behind-the-scenes footage and confirming the first full trailer will be released on July 28. The highly anticipated fantasy film, based on Tomi Adeyemi's bestselling novel, is slated for a January 15, 2027 theatrical release.
The movie, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, transports viewers to the magical kingdom of Orïsha. It follows a young woman's quest to restore stolen magic to her people, aided by her brother and the king's children, in a rebellion against a tyrannical ruler.
The ensemble cast features Thuso Mbedu in the lead role, alongside Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg, and Tosin Cole. Notable supporting actors include Cynthia Erivo, Lashana Lynch, Zackary Momoh, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Regina King, Idris Elba, and Viola Davis.
"Children of Blood and Bone" faces significant off-screen drama. Author Tomi Adeyemi, who co-wrote the script, has distanced herself, stating she has not seen and will not watch the film, citing creative decisions made without her involvement after a 14-year effort to bring it to screen.
This comes amidst renewed scrutiny for Amandla Stenberg, who has faced backlash concerning "The Acolyte" series. Stenberg had previously addressed racist and homophobic attacks targeting the show, describing its cancellation as a result of "hyper-conservative bigotry."
