Chesterfield Borough Council has announced its intention to bid for the UK Town of Culture competition, a government initiative offering £3 million to the winning town for a 2028 cultural program. The bid, developed in partnership with the Chesterfield Town Board, seeks to attract visitors and showcase the borough's cultural assets. This move follows similar considerations by other towns across Derbyshire.
Council leader Tricia Gilby expressed enthusiasm, stating the competition provides a national spotlight for Chesterfield's distinctiveness and community-driven cultural growth. Towns nationwide are invited to submit expressions of interest by March 31, with shortlisted candidates receiving £60,000 for their final bids.
An expert panel will select three finalists. The winning town will receive the main prize, while the two runners-up will each get £250,000 to implement their proposed programs. The government launched this scheme to foster local pride by encouraging towns to highlight their unique stories. The shortlist will be revealed shortly after the deadline, and the ultimate winner confirmed by early 2027.
