Iconic entertainer Cher accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammy Awards, delivering an inspiring message about perseverance. Born Cherilyn Sarkisian in 1946, her early life was marked by instability and shyness. She dropped out of school at 16 to pursue a music career, working as a waitress and backup singer in Los Angeles.
Teaming up with Sonny Bono, they found early success as Sonny & Cher, hitting number one with 'I Got You Babe' in 1965 when Cher was 19. As their sound faded, Cher faced industry doubt and career lows, even being told her time was over by the early 1980s.
Undeterred, Cher reinvented herself as an actress, earning an Academy Award for Best Actress in 'Moonstruck' in 1988. She continued her music career, releasing 'Believe' in 1998. This Grammy-winning hit made her the first artist to use Auto-Tune on a chart-topping single.
Cher's career has garnered numerous accolades, including an Oscar, a Grammy, an Emmy, and three Golden Globes. She is uniquely recognized as an acting Oscar winner and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, embodying a career defined by unwavering dedication and multiple comebacks.
