The incident unfolded on their farm in Benoni, South Africa, during a drunken rage by Charles Theron. Theron recounted hiding with her mother as her father fired shots through their bedroom door.

Gerda Theron retrieved her gun and, after her husband rearmed himself, shot him. Authorities deemed the killing justified, but the event profoundly impacted Theron, who later moved to Italy at 16 to escape her past. She concealed the trauma for years, even telling people her father died in a car accident.
