Gebanshah Ni Vav, a 16th-century stepwell in Champaner, was recently transformed into a living narrator through an immersive audiovisual installation by artist Kakoli Sen. This initiative, timed with World Heritage Day, used sound, light, and storytelling to guide visitors through the stepwell's history.
The artwork personified the structure, allowing it to recount its evolution from a crucial water source in an arid landscape to a vibrant social and cultural meeting point. The installation underscored the stepwell's role beyond a mere historical relic, highlighting its significance in religious, cultural, and social practices.
Artist Kakoli Sen, with over a decade of experience in engaging with archaeological landscapes, expanded this project beyond its initial mapping intentions. The initiative, under the banner 'Soul of A Vav,' seeks to revive neglected stepwells through public engagement and sensory experiences, emphasizing conservation responsibilities.
