Summary

- The duo blends influences from rave, punk, and local Belfast music.
- Their music aims to counter division and promote unity post-conflict.

The Belfast-based musical duo Chalk, comprised of Ross Cullen and Benedict Goddard, has launched their debut album, Crystalpunk. This release delves into the complex identity issues that emerged in Northern Ireland after the Troubles.
Goddard, of English and Irish heritage, and Cullen, from a mixed-religion background, have crafted a sound that reflects their hybrid identities. Crystalpunk synthesizes influences ranging from electronic music and Nine Inch Nails' intensity to the punk and rave scenes of Belfast.
The album's themes address the post-conflict "identity crisis" and the feeling of being "unclaimed on both sides." Cullen states the music aims to offer a personal perspective on living in a city slowly unknotting itself from past trauma.
Despite playing SXSW and embarking on international tours, Chalk remains rooted in Belfast. They aim to contribute to the city's evolving cultural landscape, emphasizing a message of unity and the need to counter hate and division, particularly in light of recent anti-immigrant sentiments in Northern Ireland in 2025.
