Centenarian Midwife Celebrated for Delivering Over 14,000 Babies in Rural Karnataka

On November 1, 2025, five individuals from north Karnataka were honored with the prestigious Kannada Rajyotsava awards for their exceptional contributions in various fields.
RV Nadagouda, a distinguished scientist and associate director at ISRO's UR Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru, has been recognized for his passionate efforts in science outreach. Over the past years, Nadagouda has delivered more than 50 talks and keynotes at schools, colleges, and technical institutions across Karnataka, inspiring people to pursue innovation and leadership in space technology.
Another awardee, SV Hittalmani, a retired deputy director of the horticulture department, is celebrated for his work in the agriculture sector. Since his retirement in 2013, Hittalmani has provided free advice, guidance, and training to farmers across the state, helping them achieve higher yields and earnings through the development of new fruit varieties like jamun, pomelo, papaya, mango, and jackfruit.
The most remarkable honoree is Eramma Gollar, a 104-year-old midwife from Vijayanagara district. Starting her journey at the age of 30, Eramma continued her work of performing natural deliveries until she was 90 years old. Despite lacking formal training, she became highly skilled, assisting over 14,000 deliveries without any life-threatening complications for the mothers or children.
