CBS Axes Late Night as Colbert Departs
6 Apr
Summary
- CBS will not produce late night shows after Colbert's exit.
- Comics Unleashed and Funny You Should Ask will fill late night slots.
- This programming change aims to improve CBS's late night profitability.

CBS is pivoting its late night strategy, ceasing in-house production after Stephen Colbert's final show in May. The 11:35 p.m. ET/PT slot, previously held by "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," will be filled by Byron Allen's "Comics Unleashed." This programming arrangement, a time buy for the 2026-2027 season, aims to address financial challenges and boost profitability in the late night segment.
Starting May 22, "Comics Unleashed" will broadcast back-to-back half-hour episodes Monday through Friday. Additionally, Allen Media Group's comedy game show "Funny You Should Ask," hosted by Jon Kelley, will also join the lineup with similar back-to-back half-hour episodes from 12:37-1:37 a.m. ET/PT. Both shows have a history of airing in syndication on CBS-owned stations.
Stephen Colbert's final episode airs May 21. His tenure marked the end of a franchise that began with David Letterman in 1993. While executives cite financial reasons for the programming change, the decision comes after Colbert's critical remarks regarding a settlement involving President Donald Trump.
