Italy has acquired a significant baroque masterpiece by Caravaggio for €30 million, marking one of the largest sums the state has paid for artwork. Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli stated the portrait of Monsignor Maffeo Barberini, who later ascended to the papacy as Pope Urban VIII, is of "exceptional importance."
This purchase is part of a broader initiative to preserve national cultural heritage and prevent major artworks from entering private markets. The painting, created around 1598, shows Barberini as a cleric and is one of only three known portraits by Caravaggio.
The artwork, previously held in a private Florentine collection, has been moved to the Palazzo Barberini in Rome. It will be displayed alongside other pieces by the master artist, ensuring public and scholarly access to this historical treasure.
