The latest adaptation of Cape Fear, now streaming on Apple TV, includes a subtle Easter egg that connects it to the 1991 film. Screenwriter Wesley Strick makes an appearance as a doctor in episode 2, examining Javier Bardem's Max Cady.
Showrunner Nick Antosca revealed that Strick, the writer of the 1991 film, is his neighbor in Los Angeles, which led to the cameo. Strick himself noted the significance, having previously facilitated cameos for stars of the 1962 original in his 1991 screenplay.
Juliette Lewis, who earned an Oscar nomination for her role in the 1991 film, also returns to the series. Antosca aimed for callbacks to be meaningful rather than distracting. Scorsese and Spielberg, who were involved in the 1991 film, served as executive producers for the new series.
Antosca describes this new version, inspired by the 1957 novel The Executioners, as a "timeless nightmare" reflecting contemporary fears. New episodes are released Fridays.
