Canada has officially selected the transatlantic drama 'Nina Roza' as its contender for the best international feature film category at the upcoming 99th Academy Awards. The film, a co-production involving Canada, Belgium, Bulgaria, and Italy, made its debut at the Berlin Film Festival.
There, director Geneviève Dulude-De Celles received the prestigious Silver Bear award for best screenplay. 'Nina Roza' delves into the story of Mihail, an art expert who fled Bulgaria three decades ago. His return to authenticate the art of an eight-year-old Bulgarian prodigy forces him to confront long-buried memories and the ghosts of his past.
The film, produced by Colonelle Films and others, stars Galin Stoev and Sofia Stanina. Following its Berlin premiere, 'Nina Roza' has been featured on the international festival circuit and is scheduled for presentation at the Festival International du Film Francophone de Namur and AFI Fest. Its theatrical release in Quebec began in April 2026.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will reveal the shortlist of fifteen films on December 15, with the final five nominees announced on January 21, 2027. The 99th Academy Awards ceremony is slated for March 14, 2027.
