The iconic character Buzz Lightyear from Disney Pixar's Toy Story franchise was inspired by a real-life hero: Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Aldrin, renowned for being the second human to set foot on the Moon, shares his name with the beloved pull-string cowboy doll.
This unique connection extends beyond just a name; both the character and the astronaut have a profound love for space exploration. In a remarkable turn of events, a Buzz Lightyear action figure was sent into orbit for a 15-month mission aboard the space shuttle Discovery, a journey it reportedly completed after being briefed by Aldrin himself. The Toy Story franchise, which first launched in 1995, is set to release its fifth installment on June 19, 2026.
The upcoming film, Toy Story 5, will reportedly explore the toys' biggest challenge yet: technology. The franchise continues to captivate audiences, with the first film's success leading to a popular Buzz Lightyear toy in 1996.
