Bulgaria has chosen Valeska Grisebach's "The Dreamed Adventure" as its submission for the 99th Academy Awards' best international feature category. The film is a slow-burning thriller.
It follows archaeologist Veska, who gets entangled in criminal activities when trying to help a friend in a crime-ridden Bulgarian border town. Grisebach, the German director, dedicated years to researching the film and casting non-professionals. This marks her second feature filmed in Bulgaria.
"The Dreamed Adventure" received the Jury Prize at its Cannes premiere. While Bulgaria has submitted films previously, none have yet earned an Oscar nomination or win. The shortlist will be announced on December 15, with nominations on January 21, 2027, and the ceremony on March 14, 2027.
