Hulu has unexpectedly canceled the upcoming reboot of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," a decision that reportedly left the cast and director blindsided. The original series, which aired from 1997 to 2003, centered on a teenager battling supernatural forces in Sunnydale, California.
The Buffyverse has been plagued by numerous behind-the-scenes issues since its conclusion. Actor Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris, has publicly battled addiction and faced multiple legal troubles. Actress Emma Caulfield Ford, known for her role as Anya Jenkins, revealed in 2022 her ongoing struggle with multiple sclerosis, diagnosed in 2010.
Adding to the series' troubled legacy, creator Joss Whedon faced allegations of "cruelty" and abuse of power from cast members starting in 2021. These claims, including those by Charisma Carpenter and Michelle Trachtenberg, described a "toxic" work environment.
The show has also faced modern criticism for problematic storylines, such as a controversial rape scene involving Spike and Buffy, and a perceived lack of diversity among its characters.
