Hulu Scraps 'Buffy: New Sunnydale' Series

The planned 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' sequel series, 'Buffy: New Sunnydale,' will not be moving forward at Hulu. Sarah Michelle Gellar shared the disappointing news on Instagram, stating that the streaming service had decided against proceeding with the project. The reboot, which was ordered as a pilot in February 2025, was set to star Ryan Kiera Armstrong as the new slayer, with Gellar returning in a recurring capacity.
Chloé Zhao was attached to direct and executive produce the new iteration, developed at 20th Television and Searchlight Television. Nora and Lila Zuckerman were slated to write, showrun, and executive produce. Original series creator Joss Whedon was not involved in this reboot, which aimed to continue the legacy of the beloved 1997 series.
