Buffy Fans Protest Hulu After Show Cancellation

Fans continue to express their displeasure a month after Disney canceled the planned "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" reboot. The project, intended as a soft reboot for Hulu, was met with widespread fan outcry. A group of approximately 20 fans recently demonstrated outside Hulu's Santa Monica office, marking one month since the cancellation and celebrating what they dubbed International Buffy Day, also Sarah Michelle Gellar's birthday.

Sources revealed that both Sarah Michelle Gellar and director Chloé Zhao were taken by surprise by the abrupt cancellation. This news came as Gellar celebrated a successful launch for her movie "Ready or Not 2: Here I Come" at SXSW, and Zhao received eight Oscar nominations for "Hamnet." Both women were reportedly enthusiastic about contributing to Buffy's legacy.

The reboot, officially titled "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale," was initially announced in February 2025. It was expected to feature Ryan Kiera Armstrong as the new slayer, with Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising her iconic role in a recurring capacity. The original "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" series aired for seven seasons starting in 1997.
