K-Pop's Comeback: Can BTS Reignite Global Fever?
21 Mar
Summary
- BTS's return is expected to boost Hybe's profits after a significant decrease.
- K-Pop experienced success with 'KPop Demon Hunters' and other groups during BTS's hiatus.
- The global K-Pop market is highly lucrative, with fans spending significantly on merchandise.

The K-pop genre is poised for a potential resurgence with the imminent return of BTS and their new album, "Arirang." Four years after their hiatus, the group's comeback is anticipated to address a dip in parent company Hybe's operating profits, which fell by 73 percent to approximately $35 million in 2025 despite a 17 percent revenue increase. Hybe's CFO attributed the profit decrease partly to restructuring its U.S. business and launching new artists.
During BTS's break, other K-pop acts like Blackpink, Stray Kids, and Enhypen achieved significant success, with Stray Kids topping the Billboard 200 and "KPop Demon Hunters" becoming a Netflix hit. However, cultural critic Lim Hee-yun notes that these "next tier" artists have not yet matched BTS's global phenomenon-level impact. Despite this, the live music sector remains robust, with K-pop fans demonstrating high spending habits on merchandise, and tours by groups like Blackpink and Ateez selling out arenas.
BTS's return is meticulously planned, featuring 82 stadium concerts worldwide and promotional events. The group's previous success, including record-breaking sales and global fan engagement, set a high bar. While some fans may have dispersed during the hiatus, the immense commercial infrastructure and dedicated fanbase suggest BTS, alongside other established K-pop acts, is well-positioned to reignite global interest in the genre.
