Broadway Takes the Outdoors: A Festival Triumph

The first-ever three-day musical theater festival, dubbed 'The Festival,' launched on Friday, August 14, at Hutton Brickyards in Kingston, N.Y., drawing approximately 2,000 attendees. This ambitious event, designed to bring Broadway to an outdoor setting, was lauded for its surprisingly smooth execution.

Founders Joshua Saltman and David Schwartz prioritized logistical details, treating the event as the creation of a temporary city. This focus ensured manageable lines for facilities, ample water, and shaded areas, despite the large crowd. Attendees commended the beautiful Hudson River location and the friendly atmosphere.

Performances spanned three stages, featuring a variety of acts from energetic dance parties and Broadway song celebrations to intimate acoustic sets. Notable performers included Alex Newell, Christopher Jackson, Mandy Gonzalez, and a preview of Adam Pascal's return to Hamilton. The festival aims to foster discovery and community within the theater world.

Future programming includes original cast reunions for 'Rent' and performances by Audra McDonald and Kelli O'Hara.
