In October 2025, it was announced that British comedian and multi-hyphenate Alice Lowe has signed a two-picture deal with UK production company Western Edge Pictures (WEP). This comes after the two previously collaborated on Lowe's feature directorial debut Prevenge and the 2024 comedy Timestalker.
As part of the new deal, Lowe is now lining up two new projects - a horror take on the Shakespeare classic A Midsummer Night's Dream and a dark comedy horror titled Sprites. For both films, Lowe will write, direct, and have a key, though not lead, role.
Regarding the Midsummer Night's Dream project, Lowe expressed a desire to revisit the classic story in a more terrifying and odd way, tapping into the dark undercurrents of the original. WEP's Vaughan Sivell described it as Lowe's unique take on the material, retaining the best bits of comedy and magic but in a totally original setting.
Sprites, on the other hand, is described as semi-autobiographical, set in the early 1980s - a period that fascinates Lowe. The film explores the societal shifts of that time, moving from trust in institutions to a more individualistic and self-centered culture. Lowe sees it as a story about the fear of adults and how children could slip through the cracks of a changing social landscape.
WEP is now seeking the right partners to bring both of these distinctive projects to life, showcasing Lowe's talent for blending genres and her personal experiences into compelling cinematic stories.
