Summary
- Showrunner cited show's tone for removing Francesca's miscarriage storyline.
- The miscarriage was removed to avoid overly morbid themes on screen.
- Francesca's grief over John's death was already substantial for the show.

The recent release of Bridgerton season 4, part two, has sparked discussion regarding changes made to Francesca's storyline, notably the omission of her miscarriage.
Showrunner Jess Brownell revealed that while the examination confirmed Francesca was not pregnant, the decision to remove the miscarriage was deliberate. This move aimed to preserve the show's established tone, as the themes surrounding John Stirling's death and funeral were already darker than typical for Bridgerton.
Brownell expressed concerns that depicting a miscarriage would introduce overly morbid elements, making it difficult for Francesca's character to recover onscreen. While the broader narrative arc and Francesca's eventual romance with Michael (gender-swapped from the book's Michael) will be honored, the miscarriage was deemed too heavy for the series.
Furthermore, John Stirling's death was placed earlier in the season compared to the novels. This adjustment was made to provide ample time for audiences to grieve with Francesca and to avoid rushing her emotional journey. The earlier death also served to prompt Benedict's pursuit of Sophie.
