Summary
- Bridgerton season 4 omitted Francesca's miscarriage from the book.
- Showrunner deemed the miscarriage storyline 'too morbid' for the show.
- Julia Quinn supported the change, citing her own experiences with loss.

Bridgerton's fourth season, which concluded recently, notably excluded Francesca's miscarriage, a key event from Julia Quinn's novel When He Was Wicked. Instead of experiencing a miscarriage weeks after her husband John's death, Francesca learns she is not pregnant.
Showrunner Jess Brownell explained that the miscarriage storyline was deemed "too morbid" for the screen, suggesting it would be difficult for Francesca's character to recover from such an event on camera. Brownell emphasized the show's commitment to honoring fertility themes, which they aim to continue exploring in future seasons.
Julia Quinn, the author, expressed understanding for the creative decision. Quinn, who personally experienced pregnancy loss, stated that while the method of loss was altered, Francesca's grief remains authentic. She also commended the show's handling of John's sudden death, drawing parallels to her own family's experiences with sudden loss.
Brownell further elaborated on the timing of John's death, explaining it was moved to earlier in the season to allow ample time for grief. This allows characters like Benedict and Violet to reflect on the fragility of life and the importance of pursuing love.
