Bret Easton Ellis's 'The Shards': A Twisted TV Adaptation

Bret Easton Ellis is reportedly engaged with the television adaptation of his novel, "The Shards," watching the series weekly and occasionally commenting on his podcast. Executive producer Brad Simpson revealed that Ellis entrusted creator Ryan Murphy with his characters, giving him creative freedom to interpret the work for a new medium. The series is set in Los Angeles in 1981, focusing on a 17-year-old Bret Ellis during his final year at the Buckley prep school.

Ellis's world is upended by the arrival of a mysterious student, Robert Mallory, which coincides with the activities of a serial killer known as The Trawler. The novel, published in 2023, was Ellis's first in 13 years and featured fictional characters apart from the narrator. Ellis himself has spoken about the pervasive sense of dread in his work, linking it to his motivations for writing and his attraction to horror elements.

The FX adaptation stars Igby Rigney as the teenage Ellis. Rigney discussed the challenging yet fun directorial approach of Ryan Murphy, who requested multiple takes with varied interpretations. This process sometimes involved Rigney having to deliver narration while surrounded by actors engaged in more lighthearted scenes.
