- Attracts international visitors for its specialized screenings.
Pictureville Cinema, located at the National Science and Media Museum, is celebrating a significant milestone: 30 years of its unique Widescreen Weekend film festival. This annual event is celebrated for showcasing films in a variety of rare and immersive formats.
Attendees can experience movies presented in 70mm and 35mm, alongside the historic Cinerama technology. Developed in the 1950s, Cinerama utilizes three synchronized projectors to cast images onto a deeply curved, expansive screen, offering a distinctive cinematic experience.
The festival, which first screened in 1996 with a modest selection of six films, has grown considerably. Organizers note that Pictureville Cinema stands as the world's last remaining venue capable of showing Cinerama films, following the closures of two other specialized cinemas in 2020.
This niche event draws a dedicated international audience, with visitors traveling from countries such as Australia, Poland, the United States, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and Germany. The festival's longevity and international draw are highlighted as a triumph, especially given the increasing operational costs faced by cultural events today.
