Oscar-nominated director Rachid Bouchareb is set to film 'Reggane,' a feature delving into France's initial nuclear tests in the Algerian Sahara. This project builds upon his research for the documentary 'Boomerang Atomic,' aiming to illuminate a suppressed chapter of colonial history. The narrative will center on a young Algerian shepherd whose life is disrupted by the nuclear program.

Bouchareb intends 'Reggane' to fill historical omissions, noting the frequent absence of Algerians in existing imagery from the test sites. He seeks to portray the lives of Algerian workers and Tuareg populations alongside French military and scientific personnel. The film will address the ongoing consequences, including potential long-term radioactive contamination.

Production is slated to begin in September 2026 in southern Algeria, with filming locations including Timimoun and Tamanrasset. The director plans to shoot in 65mm for its visual scale. Supported by Algerian authorities, the film's financing involves Algeria, Belgium, and Italy, with an ongoing discussion for a U.S. partner.
