Boots Riley, the visionary filmmaker behind "Sorry to Bother You," is set to debut his latest work, "I Love Boosters," on the West Coast. This new feature film has been selected as the Centerpiece presentation for the 69th San Francisco International Film Festival (SFFILM).
The premiere screenings are scheduled for April 28 at the historic Grand Lake Theatre in Oakland. Following the screenings, Riley will participate in an onstage conversation. Tickets for SFFILM members go on sale March 2, with general public sales beginning March 2. "I Love Boosters" tells the story of a group of young women who transform shoplifting into a defiant act, aiming to make fashion more accessible.
Keke Palmer leads the cast as Corvette, the mastermind behind the crew's heists across Oakland. Their exploits attract the attention of fashion mogul Christine Smith, portrayed by Demi Moore. The narrative also hints at the incorporation of supernatural elements and time-bending technology as the crew plans a final, ambitious heist.
The San Francisco International Film Festival will span from April 24 to May 4, encompassing screenings in San Francisco, Berkeley, and Oakland. Riley expressed his excitement about bringing "I Love Boosters" to SFFILM, citing the organization's early support of his filmmaking career. He noted the personal significance of premiering in his hometown at the Grand Lake Theatre, a venue he frequented in his youth, and described the film as his best work.
