Bonnie Tyler's legendary 1983 power ballad, "Total Eclipse of the Heart," has officially surpassed one billion streams on Spotify, solidifying its status as one of the most enduring songs of all time. The gravelly-voiced Welsh icon, born Gaynor Hopkins in Neath, expressed her surprise and delight at the milestone, though she humorously noted that her earnings from the streams amount to "about nothing."
Tyler, who was discovered by a talent scout in Swansea, noted that the original eight-minute version of the song was initially thought to be too long for radio play. However, the four-minute radio edit became a worldwide sensation, topping charts in the UK and US. The song's enduring appeal is evident in its frequent use in advertisements and films, contributing to its evergreen status.
In addition to the Spotify achievement, the music video for "Total Eclipse of the Heart" has garnered over 1.2 billion views on YouTube. Tyler, who also received a gold disk for David Guetta's "Together" which samples her hit, maintains that she never tires of singing the beloved track. She will be embarking on a tour in the spring, demonstrating her continued passion for performing at 74 years old.
