Summary
- Hart Hanson says Fox forced him to add serial killers.
- He found serial killers uninteresting for the show.
- The Gravedigger was an exception he enjoyed creating.

The creator of the long-running Fox series "Bones," Hart Hanson, has shared that the show's inclusion of serial killer antagonists was a result of network pressure. Hanson expressed that he was "bullied and forced and cajoled" by Fox into adding these villains to the crime procedural, which concluded its 12-season run in 2017. He found serial killers to be a narrative element that did not align with his creative interests for the show.
Hanson indicated that he actively tried to make audiences sympathetic to the killers, a common practice in "Bones," but felt that serial killers inherently lacked such relatable qualities. Despite his general disinterest, he highlighted the character known as the Gravedigger as a significant exception. This particular villain, who specialized in burying victims alive in confined spaces for ransom, was a creation Hanson genuinely found thrilling to bring to the series.
