The National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in Mumbai has opened a significant exhibition titled 'Lens & Legacy: Bollywood in Focus.' This event, launched on April 30, 2026, deliberately chosen to honor the birth anniversary of Dadasaheb Phalke, marks a moment of reflection for the Indian film industry. The exhibition displays rare archival photographs, studio portraits, and film stills spanning decades of cinema.
Veteran actress Hema Malini attended the opening and was visibly moved at a tribute wall dedicated to her late husband, Dharmendra. She shared her profound sense of loss and expressed uncertainty about coping without him. The exhibition also features a tribute to singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away recently.
NGMA Director Nidhi Choudhari highlighted the exhibition's role in celebrating Mumbai's identity as a UNESCO Creative City of Films. It traces the visual and cultural journey of Indian cinema. The event drew notable figures, including Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma and Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar.
Photographer Avinash Gowariker contributed works ranging from Amitabh Bachchan to newer stars. The exhibition, curated by Shruti Das and SMM Ausaja, includes a meticulous archival section from the 1930s to the 1960s. It is free to the public and will run until June 13, 2026.
