Bollywood Music: Evolution or Decline?
10 Feb
Summary
- Fewer past releases made old songs seem brighter.
- Today's music flood dilutes overall quality.
- Music evolution is about scale, not decline.

Writer-director duo Siddharth-Garima, currently in Pune for the Mumba International Film Festival 2025, shared their perspective on the evolution of Bollywood music. They argue that the perceived decline in music quality is not an inherent failure but rather a consequence of increased scale.
Comparing the current era to the scarcity of releases during the Naya Daur era in 1957, Siddharth explained that fewer songs were produced annually. This limited output made past musical pieces seem more significant and beloved. He avoids labeling the change as good or bad, instead viewing it as a natural trend.
In contrast, the current high volume of song releases can lead to a dilution of overall quality. The duo emphasizes that this shift represents an evolution driven by the sheer volume of production, rather than a qualitative decline. Their film 'Dukaan' is set to be showcased at the festival.
