On October 9, 2022, Varinder Ghuman, a 42-year-old bodybuilder and actor, passed away at a private hospital in Amritsar. Ghuman's family members and supporters have since taken to the streets, holding a candle march to seek justice for the deceased.
The bereaved family members, along with their relatives and Ghuman's supporters, allege that there were strong reasons to believe the actor did not die of a heart attack, as claimed by the hospital authorities. Ghuman was admitted to the Amritsar-based hospital for a shoulder surgery, but the hospital claimed he suffered a heart attack post-surgery and died.
Ghuman's friends and supporters have expressed doubts about his death from the very beginning. The family did not get a post-mortem done, and Ghuman's father, Bhupinder Singh, has already submitted a complaint to the commissioner of police in Amritsar, seeking an investigation and the registration of a case.
Ghuman was a renowned bodybuilder, having won the 'Mr India' title at the annual national bodybuilding championship in 2009 and securing second place in the 'Mr Asia' contest. He was also the world's first professional vegetarian bodybuilder and had acted in several Punjabi films, including 'Kabaddi Once Again' in 2012 and 'Roar: Tigers of the Sundarbans' in 2014.
